Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) last about 10 times longer than regular incandescent bulbs and consume 75% less electricity. Replacing one 75-watt incandescent with a 19-watt CFL can save $57.50 and 763 lbs of CO₂ over the life of the CFL. Seven CFLs save the emissions of a round-trip transatlantic flight.

CFLs do contain a small amount of mercury, so be sure to recycle them when they burn out.
