The compact fluorescent bulb has become the symbol of energy conservation, and one of the most touted energy-saving tips. So at the risk of sounding like a broken record, we’ll say it again: ditching your incandescent bulbs really is worth it. Making the switch to CFLs (or uber-modern LEDs) makes sense from every angle. It will save you real money on electricity and on light bulbs. It will put a real dent in your carbon footprint. And not only is it really easy, it will actually save you work because the bulbs hardly ever need replacing.
We know when you’re standing at the check-out counter, good ol’ incandescent bulbs are as cheap as they come. But that’s deceptive—incandescents use so much more electricity, and have to be replaced so much more often, that in the long run they’re actually the most expensive option. Every CFL you install will end up saving you about $30 over the lifetime of the bulb.
Outfit your home with efficient bulbs, and remember to turn off the lights when you’re not around, and every year you’ll be $188 richer and the atmosphere 1429 pounds freer of CO2.
