When it comes to reducing the impact of your air travel, nothing can come close to keeping your feet on the ground. But you’re bound to fly from time to time, and when you do, remember that which plane you board can make a whole lot of difference for the climate. Just as there are a wide range of environmental impacts among cars, such is the case among flights.

  • Choose direct, non-stop flights. Laying-over at out-of-the-way airports, and adding extra liftoffs to your itinerary, burns a lot of extra fuel.
  • Fly economy class. The bigger your seat, the bigger your share of the airplane’s emissions.
  • Book daytime flights. Jet contrails trap way more heat in the atmosphere at night than they do during the day.
  • Pick newer planes. There have been major improvements in aircraft fuel efficiency over the years, so choosing a younger airline or airplane is a good way to avoid the most heavily emitting flights.
  • Eliminate one flight a year. Choose an internet, phone, or video conference instead, or vacation near home instead of jetting to the next hemisphere.

Follow these guidelines, and you’ll reduce your flight emissions by around 2500 lbs, and could save about $350 while you’re at it!
