It takes a lot of energy to heat water, and when you’re showering, most of that heat ends up tragically escaping down the drain. Short of installing a drain heat recovery system (also a pretty cool technology, but that’s an aside), your best bet is to reduce your shower water use in the first place. Sure, short cold showers are a great idea, but that is only realistic to a certain point… much less masochistic, and nearly as effective, is the low-flow shower head.
Low-flow shower heads use half the water of their profligate counterparts, are virtually indistinguishable in terms of feel, and are quite inexpensive. Installing them on your most-used showers will shrink your carbon footprint by 2123 pounds and save you $194 a year on your utility bill.
