Fridges and freezers together use 30% of kitchen energy, followed by stoves and ovens at 14% and dishwashers at 9%. But major improvements have been made in appliance technology in recent years, and replacing your old energy-guzzling appliances with efficient new ones can be a great way to cut back on your utility bills and your carbon footprint, while adding measurably to the joy of using your kitchen.
While you’re at it, think about downsizing. Switching to smaller appliances not only saves energy, it also saves space and money. And do you really need that extra fridge or chest freezer that’s chugging away in the garage, year after year, preserving just a few cans of beer and some ancient meatloaf?
What are your favorite energy-saving appliances?
