Installing a ceiling fan lets you raise the thermostat in the summer and lower it in the winter without any reduction in comfort. In the summer, a fan blowing downwards will make a room feel 4 or more degrees cooler. In the winter, set the rotor to spin backwards (pulling air up from the floor) — this will distribute the hot air that collects at the ceiling throughout the room while avoiding the draft-like feeling of a fan blowing downwards.
When choosing a fan, look for a model with an ENERGY STAR label and large blades. Larger blades are quieter because they move the same amount of air at a lower speed.
