Clever use of your window shades can dramatically reduce your heating and cooling needs.

When it’s cold out, open the curtains on the sunny side of the building to maximize solar gain, while keeping them closed at night and on the shady side of the building to insulate against heat loss.

In hot weather, closing the blinds to block direct sunlight will help keep things cool and reduce the need for air conditioning.
