Time to spruce up the house and deck the halls! Be sure to dig around for decorations from years past before you head to out buy more plastic, chemical-laden holly and pine. A box could be waiting for you to rediscover in a closet or basement, filled with plenty of useful décor. If the stuff you find just isn’t working for your holiday decorating vision, why not organize a neighborhood swap?

If you’re buying new decorations, avoid decorations that won’t biodegrade, like plastic and tinsel. Or, try filling bowls and vases with edible treats like candy canes, locally-made sweets, or organic chocolates.

Creative, homemade decorations can be “green” if you reuse stuff you already have around the house like yarn, paper, and CDs. Many guides and videos are online for DIY decorations. And of course, you can always bring some winter wonderland magic indoors: collect natural, biodegradable materials like pine cones, lush evergreen branches, or bunches of twigs and arrange them in vases, on shelves, or as centerpieces.
