Space heating accounts for almost half of U.S. home energy use. Replacing an old boiler or furnace with an efficient new model can significantly reduce the costs and climate impacts of home heating. While old boilers and furnaces are generally only 56% to 70% efficient, new models can achieve efficiencies of up to 97%. Look for the ENERGY STAR label and check the efficiency of the models you consider.
The worst time to replace your boiler is just after it’s broken down — you’ll have to go with whatever is available, rather than getting the best model.
