Whether or not you voted for them, writing your government representatives can have a big impact on their actions in office. Public officials have power over government emissions and over the energy policy that guides our economy. Let them know in no uncertain terms what your expectations are for how they will use that power. Remind your representatives that you’re counting on them to take action on fighting climate change, and that you’re watching them and holding them accountable. Don’t limit your scope—communicating with your city councilperson and class president is just as important as with your senator and governor.

Here are a few things to keep in mind while drafting your letter:

  • Be positive. Constructive commentary is much more convincing than antagonism.
  • Be specific. It is important to be clear about what the specific issue is and about how you want the official to vote or act.
  • Be simple. Don’t confuse things by writing about many issues—it is better to write several letters on different topics than a single letter on several different topics.
  • Be sure to mention up front that you are a constituent.
